You'll Scream For This Shockingly Simple, Spooky Treat!
Are you finding that you need a little help getting into the Halloween spirit? Normally, that is not something that I can relate to because I love being EXTRA at every holiday. However, with all the chaos this year, Halloween is certainly sneaking up on me and I'm finding that I am not my normal witchy self. Rest assured that we have you covered! We're completely spellbound by this truly decadent and arguably healthy treat without the tricks.
I want to be completely transparent when I tell you that making citrus crisps does require an investment of time, but I promise it is totally worth the time spent. Also, you can break this recipe in to two steps because citrus crisps will keep at room temperature in an airtight container for a couple of weeks. In this case, we've selected blood oranges for a blood-curdling effect this Halloween season. Citrus crisps are an incredibly healthy and often kid-approved snack, but because we are treating ourselves, we've dipped them in dark chocolate which is still a healthier snacking option when compared to other sweets and treats available. Plus, you will have made them, on your own, in your home, so you can feel good about that.
I will break the process into two steps below, but feel free to work through it if you have the time. That way, once you've eaten them all, you can spend the second day making the entire recipe all over again.
Dark Chocolate Dipped Blood Orange Citrus Crisps:
Ingredients:
* Blood Oranges - I would plan to use one orange for every 1 - 2 servings.
* 1 bag of dark chocolate chips
* Optional: flaky sea salt and Edible Flower Petals
Blood Orange Citrus Crisps Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 175 degrees.
-
Thinly slice oranges into 1/8" wheels.
-
Place a wire baking rack on to a baking sheet and arrange the orange wheels in a single layer on the rack.
-
Bake for 4 - 6 hours, until the crisps are dry and have shrunken some.
-
Pull the oranges from the oven and let cool completely. The oranges will continue to crisp as they cool.
-
Once cooled completely, you may store in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
Chocolate Dipped Instructions:
-
Melt chocolate chips - we chose dark chocolate, but select whatever chocolate you prefer. I use a DIY double boiler method for melting chocolate, but you may use any method that works for you - just be sure not to burn the chocolate!
-
I would never tell you how much chocolate to use - that depends both on how many orange crisps you've made and your mood. If you're having a day, use as much chocolate as you need - no judgement.
-
Once you have silky melted chocolate, dip a corner, a half, or the entire orange crisp wheel into the melted chocolate.
-
Optional - to garnish: once dipped but before the chocolate has hardened, sprinkle flaky sea salt or Edible Flower Petals on to the chocolate and let set.
-
Lay chocolate dipped orange crisps on to a plate lined with parchment paper. To fully set, I would recommend putting the plate into the refrigerator or freezer.
Simple, sweet and spooky! We hope you enjoy this recipe and if you have any interesting tweaks you'd recommend, please do not hesitate to let us know!
Cheers!
